This image is from the Kawaii art form. This art form targets teenage girls – who love cute, pretty things.

Kawaii is usually found in cute, themed coloring book. Kawaii is a Japanese word. It roughly originated during 1970s. Kawaii features building and food items in a cute, simplified and aesthetic way. It is usually based on playful themes.

Initially, this art form was popularized by specific style of handwriting – Burikko – ji. This style was later influenced by Manga, Anime.

India does not have any single art form that is akin to Kawaii. Yet, in terms of aesthetics, there are various regional art forms. To list a few examples, there are Gond Paintings from the tribals of central India. Madhubani from the Mithila region of Bihar is another example. Warli from Maharashtra and Patta Chitra from Odisha and West Bengal are also notable. Cheriyal Scroll from Telangana is another cute art form with bold colors.

Kawaii, just like the Indian art forms, helps with emotional regulation. It provides an effective non-verbal way of communication. It is also a wonderful pastime that makes everyday life cute and cozy.
